- eng Eleusis, located some 22 km west of Athens, was the site of the cult of Demeter and the sanctuary in which the Eleusinian Mysteries were celebrated from the Bronze Age to the Roman Imperial period. It was a coastal deme of the tribe Hippothoontis and site of a military garrison in the Classical and Hellenistic periods.
