- en Karanis was a settlement (κώμη) located on the northern edge of the Fayum, now Kom Ausīm. Ptolemy II Philadelphus established Karanias in order to settle Greek mercenaries among indigenous Egyptians. This foundation, and others, also aimed to exploit the agricultural fertility of the Fayum depression.
