This paper reviews the most influential ones, trying to summarize the recent, radical changes in the theoretical perspective on the emergence, development and collapse of complexity in human societies. The most serious problem, today, seems to be an enormous gap between the inadequacy of the archaeological record and the growing refinement of theories.
