- Abstract
- Recent excavations carried out in 2010 on the necropolis of Fossa (AQ) had brought to light some new graves dated to the Iron age. These finds suggested attempting revision of the earliest phases of pre-Roman cultures in the Abruzzo region. Starting from the most characteristic features of the funerary habits of the Final Bronze Age and Iron Age, we set out to fill out the picture of the various aspects of funerary ideology (ritual, identification of gender, role and rank), of the metal artifacts and their types in the coastal area of Abruzzo and in the internal area of the L'Aquila region. We distinguished the period examined into three main phases, showing close connections with the material culture of internal regions in the Italian peninsula (Umbria, Latium vetus) and of Campania (Capua, Sala Consilina), identifying the most typical characteristics in the Celano- Paludi necropolis for our Phase I (end of Final Bronze age-beginnings of First Iron age); in the Comino-Guardiagrele necropolis for Phase 2 (First Iron age-beginnings of Second Iron age); and in the necropolis of Fossa for Phase 3 (Second Iron age).
